Description

Academic research is a powerful source of innovation, but turning a discovery into a real-world product is a complex process. From Lab to Launch gives scientists, inventors, and innovators a clear, candid look at how to navigate that path. Davis Farmer draws on decades of experience in biotech startups, licensing, and global dealmaking to help researchers understand what to expect when science meets business. You’ll learn: * How to approach invention disclosure and intellectual property * What tech transfer offices actually do, and how to work with them * When it makes sense to launch a company, and how to build one that lasts * Why most startups fail, and how to avoid common traps * What role you should play in the process, and how to choose wisely Whether you're licensing an invention, starting a venture, or advising someone who is, this guide brings clarity to a high-stakes journey.

Review
"I first met Davis when he worked with us at the UK Medical Research Council in the mid-1990s. For more than three decades since, he has been a driving force in the world of academic spin-outs.

What truly sets Davis apart is not only his deep worldwide knowledge of the interface between industry and academic research, but his extraordinary gift for solving problems at this interface. His success stems from the affection he inspires and his strategic insights and uncanny instinct in identifying technologies with real potential. Any reader will understand why Davis has become an invaluable friend. I cannot recommend him as a mentor highly enough." — Christopher Hentschel, PhD Former Head, MRC Collaborative Center and Malaria Medical Ventures

"What a remarkable book! Nothing like it has been done before, and it will be an invaluable part of my library. I have personally travelled the journey that Farmer describes multiple times and often reflect on the recipes for successes and failures in my experience and share these with colleagues, founders, and first-time CEOs. My insights, shaped by over twenty-five years in biotech, might have been foreshortened and facilitated if I had Farmer’s book earlier. Farmer and I worked together on several ventures, and he knows what he’s talking about! The anecdotes in the book are enormous fun and provide great insights." — Thomas P. Monath, MD, FACP, FASTMH, COL (ret) USA Managing Partner & Chief Scientist, Quigley BioPharma; Former Division Director, CDC and USAMRIID; Partner, Kleiner, Perkins Caufield & Byers Pandemic Fund
